Basil’s Food Truck announced it was closing today. Chef Cameron Anderson and Tatum Helm opened the food truck in January from a retrofitted school bus.
Anderson and Helm said it was the best decision for them based on their current situation, and they appreciate the community’s support.
“It’s not something I wanted to do—it’s been hard on me for sure,” Anderson said. It’s just the best thing to do right now.”
After culinary school, Anderson worked in center-of-the-plate fine dining for years before returning home in 2022 to launch Camcooks4u with Helm. In total, he has over 20 years of experience in the food industry.
Camcooks4u specialized in custom catering, while Basil’s offered “scratch food at an affordable price.” Basil’s also regularly sourced local farmers’ produce, meats, and other ingredients.
He said getting Owensboro to embrace his innovative cooking style was always a struggle.
“I’m not planning on getting back into food anytime soon unless an opportunity presents itself,” he said. “I know we made good and elegant food for people, and I’m proud of that.”
Anderson has begun a career at Sun Windows, while Helm plans to focus on her career with Owensboro Radio.
