Dakota Edge has been farming his entire life. He first introduced Edge Farms Produce to the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market 14 years ago when he was a sophomore at Trinity High School in Whitesville.

“I’ve always been doing something on the farm, from gardening to tobacco and other stuff like that,” Edge said. “Once I learned what I was doing, I started doing my own stuff, and then my brother and I just took off from there.”

Edge said his biggest seller is tomatoes, but he offers several produce options, including sweet corn, cabbage, sweet peppers, and onions. He has also gained notoriety at the market for strawberries, pumpkins, and watermelons.

To keep up with demand, Edge built multiple greenhouses on his farm to extend his growing season.

“They’re pretty much done by this time of year, but starting the greenhouse early helps get tomatoes and other produce by April and May when you can’t have field tomatoes,” he said.

Edge added that the Farmers’ Market accounts for nearly 90% of his business, and he is grateful for the community’s continued support.

“It’s been very good to me,” he said. “I enjoy seeing my regular customers and meeting new ones. It’s just a place where people can go and get stuff from several vendors. They have expectations, and they’ve been able to meet them there.”

Edge Farms isn’t the only vendor serving tomatoes and produce at the market, and Edge said he appreciates that. He also raises cattle on his farm but decided it was in his best interest to focus on produce for the market.

“Everyone always supports each other. There are some folks down there who have beef and pork and do great at it,” he said. “The Farmers’ Market has been the best. If I couldn’t go down there, I’m not sure I would have much of a market.”

Edge is a Whitesville native and takes pride in calling the small community home.
