Macedonia Baptist Church of Owensboro will celebrate its 175th anniversary on August 11. On the same date in 1849, 25 people joined to form a building committee to erect a house for worship.

The church is celebrating the occasion over the next few weeks, leading up to a morning worship service at 10:30 a.m. on the 11th, followed by a potluck. On the evening of the 10th, the church will host a free community block party full of food, fun, and fellowship.

The church is located at 4839 Millers Mill Road.

“This event is open to any and everyone,” said church pastor Connor Reed. “If you’ve had any history with Macedonia, this event is for you! And we’d be honored to have you and your family come and join us in celebrating what was, what is, and what will be happening at Macedonia Baptist Church.”

That initial building committee located land on Millers Mill Road, where they built a small framed building and dedicated the debt-free church in March of 1850.

Reed said several things have changed over the years, but one thing has remained a constant: “the faithfulness of God.”

“Through all these years, the concept objective for the church has been to fulfill the Great Commission, as found in Matthew 28:19-20,” he said. “Because of the church’s great commitment to God and His will, Macedonia Baptist Church has made a significant difference in people’s lives.”

Reed reiterated that the celebration on August 11 is not the end but the beginning of God’s work. He added that it gives him great joy to know that his congregation welcomes others with a mission of making them feel loved and accepted.

“There are many things that make the church community here special. However, one of the things that stands out makes the church community so special is we understand that we are an imperfect group of people, serving a perfect God,” he said. “Macedonia has been described to me as one of the most welcoming congregations around.”

He attributes the church’s long-standing success to its faithfulness to God. He elaborated that it’s often easy for people to perceive things as perfect when, in reality, the church has had its fair share of ups and downs.

Reed first came to the church in 2019 as the pastor of students and young adults. In 2022, he was promoted to senior pastor and said he can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Reed is hosting several guest speakers on the Sundays leading up to the 11th. Jerry Tooley and Steve Evans spoke this past weekend. Todd Gray and Cathy Mullins will present on the 21st, followed by Mike Jones and Taylor Dooley. Collin Coots and Jason Stewart will speak on the 4th.
