The Latino Health Fair is officially coming back this Saturday, thanks to the Bakhita Empowerment Initiative and the Greater Owensboro Alianza Latina. Thirty agencies will provide attendees with school supplies, health services, and more.
Greater Owensboro Alianza Latina (GOAL) Case Manager Heidi Reyes-Taylor said people in the Latino community often don’t know how to find resources — whether it be for health, education, or even finances. Organizers hope the event brings every aspect of health to the community and connects them where needed.
“We hope that by creating a space for vendors of different areas, the community will take the opportunity to make new contacts and improve their health in ways they had not thought of previously. It is all about creating a better community through efforts like this that won’t see fruition for many years, but it is worth investing in,” Reyes-Taylor said.
The event is free to attend and will be held at 514 East 4th Street. Vendors will offer free backpacks and school supplies, hybrid workouts (led by Vicky Montalvo), financial literacy education (led by Old National Bank), local public school registry assistance, and medical services provided by different health agencies.
Through the work the Bakhita Empowerment Initiative does each day for survivors of sex and labor trafficking, Reyes-Taylor said, she sees how the local and regional Latino community responds to situations of health crisis.
“There is so much at risk by neglecting a person’s needs because of a lack of resources. Owensboro is a unique gem that is filled with people who want to create a better Owensboro. This is a small part of the movement to help push a better and healthier Owensboro,” Reyes-Taylor said.
She hopes that the fair can be an early step in creating generational change throughout the community.
