Wendell Foster’s annual First Responders BBQ received a helping hand last year from Chamber Young Professionals, and the two organizations plan to again celebrate local police, fire, and medical responders this Thursday.

The lunch began in 2018 as a way for the nonprofit to thank the area’s first responders for their work for the campus, city, and county.

“First responders serve our community each and every day. Each year, Wendell Foster looks forward to serving them lunch as a way to say ‘thank you’ for that service,” CEO Doug Hoyt said.

Last year, the event brought out roughly 150 first responders to enjoy a barbecued meal and ice cream, plus a chance to connect with the residents of Wendell Foster – all free of charge. This year, organizers hope to build on the momentum.

The meal will start at 10:30 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. at Wendell Foster’s Sensory Park. All first responders in the area are invited to a cookout that includes a free lunch grilled by Atmos Energy, complimentary ice cream, yard games, music by Blue Line Entertainment, and door prizes.

Vice President of Development & Community Development Kara Howard said that for those responders who cannot make it, meals will be delivered to the different stations across the community.

Howard noted that bringing CYP in as a partner for last year’s celebration benefitted the two organizations.

“Their participation last year enhanced the event, bringing a whole new meaning to building community together. From working behind the scenes to plan a successful event, to connecting with first responders and Wendell Foster residents on the day of, we are thankful to collaborate again with this strong group of young professionals,” Howard said.

This year, CYP Chair Jake Boswell said they hope to bring more connections throughout the event through their members.

“CYP can learn so much from spending time with the residents and the staff members who become like family. This event on their incredible campus draws people from many walks of life on the day of the event. As we strengthen our partnership, we also want to meet new people and interact with others we may not stop and talk to otherwise,” Boswell said.

No RSVPs are required to attend the cookout.
