Philpot’s Marjorie Swope turned 100 on Tuesday and celebrated the milestone with close friends and family at Briarpatch Restaurant and the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden. Swope is an artist, among other things, and she takes great pride in having spent her entire life on or near her family farm.

Swope shared some profound insights on the art of living a long and fulfilling life, a testament to her wisdom and experience.

“You have to keep moving and live as clean of a life as possible,” Swope said. “The good Lord must be keeping me here for a reason. I don’t think I’ve done all he wants yet.”

From spring through fall, Swope can be found outside planting new flowers and maintaining her flower beds. However, once the first snow falls, she turns to painting.

Unlike traditional artists who paint on paper or canvas, Swope paints rural landscapes on farm tools like shovels, barrels, and saw blades.

She also sells Avon and has for the past 56 years. Beyond that, she is a lifelong member of South Hampton Church, where she regularly decorates the church for special occasions. She estimates she’s seen over 30 pastors come and go over the years.

“I love staying busy and moving; it helps me stay flexible,” she said. “I like staying in my house. Some will call that hard-headedness, but it’s home.”

Swope also thrives in the kitchen, where she regularly cooks for friends and family, including her two sons David and Bobby. Her family purchased her a scooter for her birthday to further improve her active lifestyle.

After a meal at Briarpatch, Swope finished her celebration at the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden, where her friend Erma Risley arranged for the small group to enjoy cake and ice cream.

Swope lost her husband 34 years ago after several decades of marriage. Since then, she’s been trucking on along independently, leaning on friends and family for occasional help.

Just 5 years ago, she earned the title of Kentucky Colonel.

“I think the key is just being strong and steadfast in your faith, Swope said. “I love my church, and I do everything God needs me to do. I guess he still wants me to put flowers on the table (at church).”

In short, Swope’s keys to a long, prosperous life are faith, family, movement, food, and Avon.
