At least one bear has been spotted in southern Daviess County, as confirmed by a photo captured by one resident. Sheriff Brad Youngman said two other people have told him about possible sightings, and one of them thought there might be cubs.

The photo above was sent to Youngman and Owensboro Times was given permission to share it. The photo was shared on Saturday following a sighting on McCormick Road.

“I had already been told of a possible encounter last night on HWY 1207 but it was dark so the person couldn’t be completely sure,” Youngman said. “She said she went to get something out of their car and spooked a large animal in the gravel driveway. It ran off throwing gravel and the person could tell it was a large animal. Earlier yesterday a person saw a black bear off Baird Road. She thought it had cubs and went to get a camera but it was gone. Those three locations are in a line generally and not far apart.”

Youngman said he doesn’t doubt any of the accounts he’s been told.

“We have had bears in the area before and it’s becoming more common,” he said. “These accounts are all people that live in the country and they know their land and what’s on it.”
