Theater Workshop of Owensboro is reviving its annual Owensboro’s Got Talent weekly talent show this month with $2,000 worth of awards for participants.
Executive Director of TWO Todd Reynolds said the show took a break over the past 4 years due to the pandemic, but the organization is in a space to host the summer staple.
“This year, we want to reestablish it and bring it back. It’s very successful and a whole lot of fun. We just want to get the ball rolling again and get people used to seeing it, coming in and enjoying Owensboro putting their talents on display,” Reynolds said.
This variety show welcomes talents of all sorts to perform. In the past, Reynolds said, they often had singers and musicians. However, the show invites all sorts of unique talent including juggling, ventriloquism, group performances, and more.
Reynolds said this show exists to spotlight the community’s talents in all facets, not just theatre or performance.
“That’s why we’re here. If we’re doing things that don’t support our vision, then we’re doing it wrong. We’re here to uplift people’s lives,” Reynolds said.
OGT has a weekly performance every Saturday in May, with the first three as preliminary rounds. In the initial rounds, contestants are judged by a local panel that decides which contestants will compete in the finale on May 25. The top three places will be awarded $1,250, $750, and $500, respectively.
Some judges include Steve Bridgmon, Gordy Wilcher, a representative from event sponsor Commonwealth Rolled Products, and event founder Teresa Wills.
The judge’s scoring will dominate the competition, yet viewers can still vote for their favorite performance at the finale.
“It might make the difference between fourth place and winning prize money for third place,” Reynolds said of the fan vote. “So show up and support your friends or the person you think is the most talented, or even if you don’t have a friend or a relative involved in it, just come in and enjoy the entertainment.”
Performers of all types are asked to register for a preliminary round before the first night by messaging TWO on Facebook or calling 270-683-5333. All preliminary auditions will be held at the Empress Theatre (418 Frederica Street) at 7 p.m.
