For nearly two decades, community members have come together annually for the CROP Walk, a local initiative tackling hunger issues in the city and globally. This year’s walk is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, and funds raised will help benefit the Daniel Pitino Shelter.

The walk will begin at 2:30 p.m., starting and ending at the Green River Aread Development District building, located just off Henderson Road near the west end of the bypass. Walkers will traverse the Adkisson Greenbelt, which has an access point near the GRADD building.

Organized by the Owensboro-Daviess County Ministerial Association, the event not only addresses immediate hunger needs in Owensboro but also extends support to those affected by disasters like hurricanes and refugees in crisis around the world.

The Rev. Dr. Claudia A. Ramisch, President of the association, said CROP is put on locally each year because they know hunger here is real and connected to concerns in the larger world.

“By reminding us that we are part of the bigger picture, we help both here and away,” she said.

A portion of the funds raised through direct pledges for walkers support the immediate needs of Owensboro residents, including aiding the Pitino Shelter’s mission to support the local community.

Walkers gather pledges from friends, family, and their faith communities, emphasizing the collective effort to combat hunger.

“We hope attendees will see that we can do more together than alone,” Ramisch said. ” We hope attendees, many who’ve been fasting for Lent or Ramadan, find fellowship with others who are concerned for our community and the world situation and have cultivated a sense of spiritual responsibility for those who are experiencing hunger.”
