Yellow Creek Park will soon be home to two 18-hole disc golf courses. The new course is being added to the east portion of the park — near the field that holds ROMP Fest — and will stretch toward the creek.

Director of County Parks Jordan Rowe said during the last fiscal year, Daviess County Fiscal Court purchased 9 baskets to be installed yet they remained in storage. Fiscal Court recently approved the purchase of 9 more baskets to complete the 18-hole course.

Crews have already begun installing concrete pads, and Rowe said he expects the full course installation to be completed by springtime.

In addition to the new course, Rowe said the Parks Department will update the holes on the current 18-hole course in the next fiscal year. Some updates include a “kiosk” at the first hole of each course plus new baskets for every hole.

Similarly, Rowe said they will update Panther Creek’s course signage. The signage for both Yellow and Pather Creeks installation costs the County $14,760.

Rowe said that was not the lowest bid, but the bidder still won because of their layout design.

“I feel really optimistic and excited about what will come from this. We’re just really focused on events and getting more people out to our parks, and the disc golf fulfilled that ambition,” Rowe said.

Dutch Napier, a member of the Owensboro Disc Golf Association, said that the sport is growing in the area.

“The more we can get courses in the area, the better it’ll be. The next thing we can do is to get something for the [younger players] to go,” Napier said.

Napier has competed in roughly 400 professional disc golf events since 2006 and is lending a hand in the design and layout of the new course.

Napier noted the installation would also help make the parks more appealing for guests and open the possibility of bigger disc golf tournaments to be hosted in Daviess County.
