Owensboro Times brought home 26 awards from the Kentucky Press Association (KPA) annual convention this weekend, including 2nd place overall in both the advertising and editorial categories.
Competing in its second year as KPA members, OT is in the same division as longstanding statewide daily newspapers, some with roots dating back over a century. OT garnered 15 awards last year.
“Owensboro Times has proven that age is not a barrier to success,” said Managing Editor Ryan Richardson. “The awards reflect our ability to deliver compelling content while also modernizing how stories are delivered.”
Richardson noted that aside from the focus on digital storytelling, one thing that sets Owensboro Times apart is the dedication to local journalism. Established in 2018, OT is the only locally owned news outlet in Daviess County.
“We’re local people sharing the news about local people,” Richardson said. “Owensboro Times remains a steadfast advocate for local news coverage, embodying the essence of community journalism. The recognition by the KPS underscores our commitment to providing accurate, informative, and impactful reporting to the residents of Daviess County. There aren’t many outlets offering that combination of digital and hyperlocal news.”
Richardson also said the awards were truly a team effort with every person on staff contributing in some way, adding that the community also plays a role in the growth and success of Owensboro Times.
“From top to bottom, every person on staff brings a different skillset and offers unique perspectives that lead to great collaboration,” he said. “We also can’t stress enough how much the community has meant to us since Day 1. We’re always adapting based on feedback from the community, and that allows us to continuously improve the product we’re able to offer. We’re proud to be Owensboro’s go-to source for local news, and we’re excited for what the future holds.”
