Owensboro’s newest Mexican restaurant, El Camino Real, opens today at 3720 New Hartford Road — inside the Owensboro Days Inn. Yeiri López and José Lozano currently operate locations in Livermore and Calhoun and decided it was time to bring their take on the popular cuisine to Owensboro.

The restaurant features an assortment of dishes, including the standard tacos, fajitas, and quesadillas — along with some specialty plates. Some of those include loaded baked potatoes and fries, quesabirrias, seafood specials, and more.

“All of our food is fresh, and we have several different plates to choose from,” López said. “Come support us and try our dishes. We have several options.”

Menjiva is originally from Chiapas, Mexico, moving to Owensboro in the late ’90s. For the last 24 years, he’s worked at several regional Mexican restaurants.

His experience transcends Mexican cuisine, most recently serving as a sushi chef at a Japanese restaurant in Terra Haute, Indiana. He said he appreciates all of his experiences and looks forward to bringing his passion for food to Owensboro.

“We have a lot of plates that aren’t available at other restaurants,” Lozano said. “We’ll have brisket tacos, al pastor, and several other plates.”

Menjivar said a fan favorite is the Kentucky chicken, which features a thin-grilled chicken breast smothered with spinach, artichoke, mushrooms, and zucchini. He said people also enjoy the Hawaiian chicken.

They’ll also have the standard arroz con pollo and chimichangas for those craving something less exotic.
The restauraunt will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, visit El Camino Real on Facebook here.
