The SPC Brandon Scott Mullins Memorial Foundation is hosting its inaugural military youth hunt on October 14-15. In addition to hunting, the event includes hunter education, gun safety, range time, wildlife management, deer anatomy, and other activities.
The event coincides with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources’ Youth-Only Firearms Deer Hunting Weekend. Resident and nonresident youth 15 years of age and younger, who are accompanied by an adult, may take deer statewide. The appropriate hunting license and deer permits are required for hunters ages 12-15, but those ages 11 and under are not required to have a hunting license or deer permit.
The local military youth hunt will be hosted by Brandon’s parents Tommy and Cathy Mullins, who have continuously worked to preserve their son’s legacy following his death in 2011. Brandon was a 21-year-old soldier fighting in Afghanistan who died when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb.
Tommy Mullins said the idea for the hunt started with other nonprofits wishing to say thank you and wanting to give back to military men and women in the state of Kentucky.
“Brandon loved hunting and fishing, and everything outdoors, really. Hosting an event such as this has been a dream since the inception of the SPC Brandon Scott Mullins Memorial Foundation, and we’re finally seeing it come to fruition,” Tommy said.
