About a year and a half ago, Madison Jones wanted to find something that would allow her to be creative and artistic outside of her day job. She was led to candlemaking, and that in turn led to the creation of Blue House Fragrances — which specializes in handmade candles but also produces other scents for around the home.

“It’s kind of just like an outlet for me, something that I can do to make me feel more fulfilled in life,” Jones said.

According to the company website, the candles are made “using 100% soy wax that is locally grown, high quality fragrances infused with essential oils, and natural cracking wooden wicks. Our candles are petroleum-free, cruelty-free, phthalate-free, and 100% vegan.”

Jones said the soy wax is made at Owensboro Grain, and that the natural ingredients typically won’t irritate buyers’ allergies. She said that wasn’t originally going to be a major focus, but after doing some crowdsourcing she felt the community needed an option to buy products made with non-toxic and non-cancer-causing chemicals.

In addition to candles, Blue House Fragrances — formerly operating as The Ultimate Candle — has grown to include other products such as room sprays and pet sprays. Jones is also planning to offer diffusers in the near future and possibly foaming hand soaps down the road.

Blue House Fragrances celebrated its 1-year-anniversary on April 1. Jones said that over the last year, the community has been extremely supportive of her endeavors. Her products are mostly sold online, though she’s also set up in person at times at Meadow House Flowers + Gifts as well as Integrated Therapy Solutions locally, plus some locations in Frankfort.

Jones said she tries to also give back to the community as much as possible. In the past, she has partnered with My Sister’s Keeper for a donation event where customers purchase their own candle and then another is donated to the nonprofit.

“The support has been the biggest thing, honest to God. I would not be here doing what I do if it wasn’t for Owensboro, the people here are just so supportive,” Jones said.

She said her products are available to purchase individually, but customers can also sign up for monthly subscription boxes where they can receive new and exclusive products.
