The Theatre Workshop of Owensboro (TWO) is accepting scripts for its annual Summer Shorts one-act play festival. Playwrights can submit never-before-produced plays to TWO until March 31.

The festival accepts play submissions from around the world, and they go into production this summer.

“Summer Shorts gives worldwide exposure to TWO,” said producer McCellus Mays. “We receive plays from the other side of the world. I’m talking Australia, London, Japan, and everywhere in between.”

Playwrights should submit up to two original works for a fee of $20 each. The plays must be 25 pages long at most, feature five or fewer characters, and be authentic in every sense.

TWO will award $500 for the best overall play and $250 for the audience favorite, and one play can win both awards.

While there are no restrictions on language or subject matter, the plays must be producible and free from unrealistic settings.

In addition to providing a platform for playwrights, Mays said it’s also an excellent opportunity for beginning actors or those with little time to have a role in a production.

“The entire process is a lot of fun,” he said. “We’ve been doing this for over a decade, and we’re always discovering up-and-coming performers and talented individuals who have just never had the time to participate in a full-length production. It’s a great outlet, and it’s open to everyone.”
