A major cycling event returns to Owensboro this weekend with the Bluegrass Century ride. This year’s event will see the return of the Kentucky Cycling Challenge, and proceeds will benefit Young Life of Owensboro. Ride organizers would like to make the community aware of the more than 300 riders who will be on the roads of the Owensboro-Daviess County and McLean County communities this weekend.

The Bluegrass Century ride will be held Saturday and will offer three different routes for riders of all ages and experience. Riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must sign a minor registration form. The event will offer a century route (102 miles), a metric century (71 miles) and a 32-mile route. All riders will roll out at 8 a.m.

Online registration is open until 11:59 p.m. tonight, and riders can register here. Walk-up registration will be available Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum. and Saturday morning beginning at 7 a.m. at Crosspointe Baptist Church (550 Worthington Road).

The ride will start and end at Crosspointe Baptist Church. Parking will be available on site. Participants can expect an experience filled with safe, scenic routes on low-traffic roads, fully stocked rest stops with food and hydration, and a start/finish line with food and merchandise vendors before and after the ride.

“This year, the Bluegrass Century is back on the Kentucky Cycling Challenge and has grown exponentially since last year,” said Keith Johnson, one of the organizers of the Bluegrass Century. “Being a part of the Kentucky Cycling Challenge will bring more visitors to our community and we’re excited to welcome all of them. We have riders from 10 different states and one from the United Kingdom participating in the ride this year.”

This year’s ride will once again benefit Young Life of Owensboro. The Young Life Foundation is a nonprofit organization that started in Owensboro in 2011 and focuses on building mentoring relationships with middle and high school students in the local community.
