Owensboro Police Department will soon be hosting a National Night Out (NNO) event, which is designed to build healthy relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. This nationwide event will see thousands of communities join forces with the select law enforcement agencies that serve them.
OPD will hold its NNO event on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 5:30-8 p.m. at Moreland Park.
According to OPD Public Information Officer Andrew Boggess, NNO is a great opportunity for residents to hang out with and get to know their local police officers in a casual setting. The event also works to promote safer, drug-free neighborhoods in the area.
“The whole premise behind this event is promoting community partnerships and building relationships with the people of the community,” Boggess said. “We are public servants–we’re here to serve the community. If there’s someone in the community that we haven’t developed a relationship with, we’d like to.”
Boggess said the event is family-friednly. OPD will offer many amenities for children, such as free food, music and several games, including a dunk tank.
Boggess said he wouldn’t be volunteering for the dunk tank this year, though he wasn’t sure where the other officers stood on the matter.
A raffle will also be held during the event, and OPD’s Citizen Academy Alumni Association will be giving away a Samsung 55-inch 4K Smart TV as the prize.
Boggess said OPD has always seen a successful turnout for the NNO event in Owensboro, and he credited the community for being so supportive of law enforcement.
“Just because we have a good relationship doesn’t mean we couldn’t have a better relationship, but we’ve been really fortunate — we’ve always had a lot of support from the community,” he said.
