Green River Distilling Company is releasing their Green River Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey this week, marking their first self-branded bourbon in over a century. The company is holding events this week to celebrate the launch.

The events start Wednesday at 8 p.m. with a special lighting of the Glover H. Cary Bridge followed by a firework show at McConnell Plaza. Mayor Tom Watson will aslo be declaring Thursday as Green River Whiskey Day in Owensboro to honor the return of the 137-year-old company.

Jacob Call, master distiller at Green River, said that Thursday will act as the official unveiling of the new whiskey. A private event will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revive that historic brand that’s been dormant for so many years, and really be able to bring that brand back to Owensboro,” Call said.

The celebration continues Friday with a “Bourbon, Bluegrass and BBQ” day, with a limited amount of the new bottle available to be purchased by the public.

Customers can come and celebrate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and enjoy live music and samples of barbecue, and Call will be signing bottles until close.

Call said that he expects the people of Owensboro to really enjoy the new bottle, as it has small tributes to the city.

“This brand is a very historic brand and we want everyone in Owensboro to realize that it’s been gone for so long. I think it’s important for people to understand that this used to be a big deal,” Call said. “We want to do that again and put Owensboro back on the Bourbon map.”
