Ballot positions set for local 2022 Primary; not all races will have primary

The order that the names that will appear on the ballot for local races in the 2022 Primary Election has been set after a random draw Thursday afternoon at the Daviess County Courthouse. Not all races will have a primary, including the City Commissioner race.

There were eight people who filed to run for City Commission, which was the maximum number before a primary would have been required. The mayoral term does not end until 2024. Those who filed for City Commission and will be on the ballot in the General Election, listed alphabetically by last name, are: 

  • Mark Castlen
  • Deborah Fillman
  • Bob Glenn
  • Larry Maglinger
  • Robert Morris
  • Jeff Sanford
  • Pamela L. Smith-Wright
  • Dracin Williams

The Whitesville Mayor and City Commission races, as well as the city and county school board races, were not subject to the primary election filing deadline.

Candidates that will represent Daviess County in U.S. Congress, the Kentucky Senate and House, and 6th District Circuit and District courts, are also included in the list below.

County races that will have a primary 

Daviess County Judge-Executive (4 candidates)
Three Republican candidates will face off in the primary. Bruce Kunze was the lone Democratic candidate, meaning he automatically advances to the General Election and will face off against the Republican nominee.

The primary candidates will appear on the ballot in the following order:

  • Will Mounts
  • Charlie Castlen
  • Reid Haire

Daviess County Commission, Central District (7 candidates)
Six Republican candidates will face off in the primary. Tyler Sagardoy was the lone Democratic candidate, meaning he automatically advances to the General Election and will face off against the Republican nominee.

The primary candidates will appear on the ballot in the following order:

  • Andy Gamblin
  • Darrin Autry
  • Michael Norman King
  • Larry Conder
  • Jason A. Jackson
  • Dianne Burns Mackey

Daviess County Commission, East District (4 candidates)
Four Republican candidates will face off in the primary. There were no Democratic candidates.

The primary candidates will appear on the ballot in the following order:

  • Matt Fitzgerald
  • Mark Irby
  • Janie Marksberry
  • Jimmie D. Sapp

Daviess County Commission, West District (4 candidates)
Five Republican candidates will face off in the primary. There were no Democratic candidates.

The primary candidates will appear on the ballot in the following order:

  • Sharon Castle
  • Patrick Hayden
  • Dustin Warren
  • George Wathen
  • Christopher T. Castlen

Daviess County Sheriff (2 candidates)
Two Republican candidates will face off in the primary. There were no Democratic candidates.

The primary candidates will appear on the ballot in the following order:

  • Brad Youngman
  • Barry G. Smith

Daviess County Clerk (2 candidates)
Two Republican candidates will face off in the primary. There were no Democratic candidates.

The primary candidates will appear on the ballot in the following order:

  • Tonya Payne
  • Leslie A. McCarty

Daviess County Property Valuation Administrator (2 candidates)
Two Republican candidates will face off in the primary. There were no Democratic candidates.

The primary candidates will appear on the ballot in the following order:

  • Jason S. Pagan
  • Rachel Pence Foster

Justice of the Peace, West District (2 candidates)
Two Republican candidates will face off in the primary. There were no Democratic candidates.

The primary candidates will appear on the ballot in the following order:

  • Cathy Kramer
  • Charles McCarty


County races that will not have a primary 

Daviess County Attorney (2 candidates)
Republican John Burlew and Democrat Nicholas Goetz were the lone candidates for their respective parties and will face off in the General Election.


Daviess County Jailer (1 candidate)
Republican Arthur F. Maglinger is the lone candidate among both parties. He will only be on the ballot in the General Election.


Daviess County Coroner  (1 candidate)
Republican Jeff Jones is the lone candidate among both parties. He will only be on the ballot in the General Election.


Constable, West District (2 candidates)
Republican Kris D. Crawford and Democrat Scott D. Smith were the lone candidates for their respective parties and will face off in the General Election.


Constable, Central District (2 candidates)
Republican Steve Nave and Democrat Willis “Murry” Morris were the lone candidates for their respective parties and will face off in the General Election.


Constable, East District (1 candidate)
Republican Dan Bennett is the lone candidate among both parties. He will only be on the ballot in the General Election.


Justice of the Peace, East District (1 candidate)
Republican Anthony W. Cobb is the lone candidate among both parties. He will only be on the ballot in the General Election.


Justice of the Peace, Central District (1 candidate)
Democrat Christopher A. Saalwaechter is the lone candidate among both parties. He will only be on the ballot in the General Election.



6th Judicial Circuit (nonpartisan races)

Division 1 (2 candidates)
Leigh A. Jackson will face off against Jay A. Wethington.

Divison 2 (1 candidate)
Lisa Payne Jones is unopposed.

Division 3, Family Court (3 candidates)
Three candidates have filed: Julia H. Gordon, Jennifer L. Hendricks, and Thomas L. Vallandingham.



6th Judicial District (nonpartisan races)

Division 1 (1 candidates)
Misty Miller is unopposed.

Division 2 (2 candidates)
David C. Payne is unopposed.

Division 1 (1 candidates)
Four candidates have filed: Heather Wagner Blackburn, Shannon Meyer, Phillip J. Page, and J. Nick Payne.



Kentucky Legislature

Kentucky State Senator (1 candidate)
Republican Gary M. Boswell is the lone candidate for the 8th District and will only be on the ballot in the General Election.


Kentucky State Representative (3 races, 4 candidates)
Republican Suzanne Miles is the lone candidate for the 7th District and Republican Scott Lewis is the lone candidate for the 14th District.

In the 13th District, Democrat Michael Johnson will face off against Republican DJ Johnson in the General Election.



U.S. Congress

U.S. Senator (10 candidates)
Four Democratic candidates and six Republican candidates will face off in their respective primaries.

There are four Democratic candidates:

  • Joshua Wesley Blanton, Sr.
  • Charles Booker
  • Ruth Gao
  • John Merrill

There are six Republican candidates:

  • Arnold Blankenship
  • Valerie “Dr. Val” Frederick
  • Paul V. Hamilton
  • Rand Paul

U.S. Representative – 2nd Congressional District (5 candidates)
There are two Democratic candidates and three Republican candidates that will face off in their respective primaries.

  • William Dakota Compton (D)
  • Hank Linderman (D)
  • Brent Feher (R)
  • S. Brett Guthrie (R)
  • E. Lee Watts (R)
