The Daviess County Fiscal Court proclaimed Wednesday as Dr. Donald Douglas Day, with his older brother Charles Douglas accepting the proclamation.
Douglas was born near Maceo and went on to graduate from Daviess County High School in 1976 while receiving All-American distinction in track & field. He was later honored as a Distinguished Alumni and inducted into their Hall of Fame.
After graduating from DCHS, he went on to Western Kentucky University and excelled at track & field there as well.
His success on WKU’s team took him to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1980 and 1984. This distinction earned him a spot in the WKU Track and Field Hall of Fame.
In 1978, Douglas was ranked 11th in the United States and 17th worldwide in the 400-meter hurdles.
He later continued his education at the University of Kentucky and completed a residency at the University of Louisville’s Department of Anesthesia. He has practiced non-narcotic pain medicine for more than 20 years in Lexington.
In 2021, Douglas was elected Kentucky State Senator for the 22nd District — which includes Fayette, Garrad, Jessamine, Mercer, and Washington counties.
