Apollo extended its winning streak to four games with a strong performance on the road, defeating Henderson County 21-10.
It took some time for Apollo to find the endzone, but a 47-yard pass from junior quarterback Christian Combs to junior Carter Contratto made it 7-0 with 3:36 left in the first quarter.
The Colonels responded in the second quarter, as a 41-yard field goal cut it to 7-3 with 9:03 left in the half.
Minutes later Henderson County grabbed its first lead of the game, as senior quarterback Seth Goben connected with senior Brayden Powell for a 15-yard touchdown to make it a 10-7 game with 5:36 left in the first half.
Neither team was able to score again in the first half, sending Henderson County into the second half up 10-7.
Apollo’s passing game was succeeding in the first half, as Combs was 10-15 with 99 yards. However, their bread and butter wasn’t working, as they had just six rushing yards at halftime.
Despite this the Eagles kept chugging in the second half, as Combs found sophomore Eli Masterson who shed multiple tackles en route to a 52-yard touchdown.
This gave Apollo the lead once again, up 14-10 with 2:31 left in the third quarter. The Eagles expanded their lead to start the fourth quarter, as Combs sped to the endzone for a 45-yard touchdown to make it a 21-10 with 11:51 left in the fourth quarter.
This was the proverbial dagger, as Apollo was able to hold Henderson County scoreless during the fourth quarter to grab the 21-10 road victory.
Sophomore Noah Rhinerson had 45 yards on 11 carries for the Eagles, but it was Combs all-around game that pushed them to the win.
Combs finished the game with 158 passing yards and two touchdowns on 12-17 passing, while also rushing for 41 yards and a rushing touchdown on five carries.
Henderson County had seven more yards offensively than the Eagles with a total of 250, but the Eagles were more efficient and made stops when they needed to.
The Eagles now move to 5-2 overall on the season, holding on to a four-game winning streak. Getting hot at the right time, Apollo will look to make it five straight when they wrap up their two-game road trip against Marshall County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8.
