Owensboro football is looking to extend its winning streak to five games this Friday when they take on Ohio County.
The Red Devils are coming off a monster road win against Breckinridge County at a score of 56-6.
Junior quarterback Kasey Boone was a key cog in Owensboro’s offense last week, throwing for 227 yards on 10-13 passing, to go along with four touchdowns.
Junior Ethan Pendleton (96 yards on three receptions) and junior Jeremiah Goodwin (89 yards on four receptions) were his primary targets on the night finishing with two touchdowns each.
Their solid ground game allowed Boone to find this success through the air, as senior Tramel Barksdale (60 yards, six carries, two touchdowns) and freshman Deion Winstead (43 yards, three carries, one touchdown) supplied three touchdowns and a combined 103 yards on the night.
Their defense was also solid, only allowing a single touchdown. Head Coach Jay Fallin said that they need to keep growing on both sides of the ball as they head into their matchup this week.
“We need to continue to improve in all three facets of the game,” Fallin said. “We want to be sharp from the opening kickoff and execute our game plan and be able to adjust and adapt where necessary.”
They will be taking on an Ohio County team that is coming off a 38-26 win over Muhlenberg County. That matchup was their first since Sept. 3, having lost in its three previous matchups.
“OC is a team that has battled injuries but is trending up after a big district win,” Fallin said. “Their quarterback makes them go, he is a gritty, tough senior who can make plays with the ball in his hands.”
That quarterback would be senior Devin Gott, who is a dual threat that averages just under 100 yards passing per game with around 40 yards per game on the ground.
He and junior Matthew Smith lead the Eagles offense, as Smith averages 114.5 rushing yards per game.
Defensively Ohio County has struggled in its four matches, allowing at least 26 points in every single game.
In order for the Red Devils to replicate their offensive success, Fallin said they must shore up some of the little things from last week, which is something that they’ve focused on in practice.
“Cleaning up the mistakes we made against Breckinridge County and continuing to try to install wrinkles on offense, defense, and special teams that will be necessary down the road,” Fallin said.
When it comes to expectations, Fallin said he expects his team to be sharp and limit negative yardage to come away victorious when they hit the road to take on Ohio County at 7 p.m. on Friday.
“Execute and play cleanly,” Fallin said. “Limit turnovers and continue to work to eliminate the silly penalties that are putting us behind the chains.”
