Following tonight’s game against Daviess County, Owensboro’s star quarterback Gavin Wimsatt has informed the team that he will be leaving high school immediately to suit up for Rutgers University this season.

Wimsatt committed to Rutgers on April 9, 2021, but will now join the program and be able to suit up immediately if called upon.

Head Coach Jay Fallin thanked Wimsatt for leaving his mark on Owensboro Red Devils football and said that they will be his No. 1 fans.

“We appreciate Gavin and everything he has done for OHS football and everything he has meant to our program,” Fallin said. “He’s a great football player and he’s an even better young man and we will be pulling for him and rooting for him and keeping up with him as he makes this transition.”

As far as what he expects from Wimsatt as he moves on to the collegiate level, Fallin said he has upside written all over him.

“He’s got all the physical tools to be successful and the right demeanor, attitude and work ethic and the sky’s the limit for him if he’ll just keep doing all the things he’s been doing up to this point,” Fallin said. “We’ll be rooting for him every step of the way.”

On top of heading to join the Scarlet Knights, Wimsatt is expected to sign a six-figure NIL deal soon.

For the Red Devils, they will look for their next option at quarterback. Fallin said that just because Wimsatt is leaving doesn’t mean that they will falter.

“We develop a next-man-up mentality and we battle through injuries,” Fallin said. “I’ve got the utmost faith and confidence in our guys that we’re going to get back to work Monday and get ready to move forward as a football team and we’re still going to be a very good football team.”
