In a move to further enhance their broadband internet services, Owensboro Municipal Utilities is adding a broadband specialist to the organization to help with technical customer service. OMU is also increasing the speed of the internet at no cost to the buyers.

Some buyers have already had this action take place but many are still waiting, according to Director of Telecommunications Christopher Poynter.

“The router will be great to have as far as reliability and redundancy and all of that so we do need it, but we are not going to wait for this to go ahead and double the speed so that should be coming next month,” Poynter said.

General Manager Kevin Frizzell said that when it comes to the quality of the service compared to the competition, it goes back to the organization’s motto of “Local people, local service.”

In other business, the OMU board approved an identical order about vacation and policy for their employees and how to measure vacation days as COVID-19 cases keep rising locally. Frizzell said unless they were to approve this order again next year, if employees don’t use all their vacation days by the end of the calendar year they will lose them.

When it came to the budget for the month of July, Director of Finance and Accounting Lynn Holland said they were up 7.7% on operating revenues. Holland also reported they were 2.1% below budget for the megawatt-hour sales, which is due to the increase in receivables and credit revenue.

As for the fiscal year to date, Holland said they are currently 12.1% under budget — $78,000 better than the budget for telecommunications and $253,000 better than budget on water services.
