The Owensboro Bombers escaped to a 3-0 win over Carmi thanks to a trio of solid performances from its pitching staff.
Both teams were able to earn baserunners through walks and hit by pitches, but neither Carmi or Owensboro could put together a rally through the first three innings.
Cohl Proctor threw the first three innings for the Bombers, walking three, but only allowing four hits while striking out four.
After a long scoring drought, Owensboro was able to piece things together in the bottom of the fourth.
Jordan Tolle kicked off the inning with a leadoff single and a hit by pitch the following at-bat put runners on first and second with no outs.
Proctor followed things up with a single to load the bases, but a pop out by Brandon Davis quickly made the double play threat more serious with one out.
Carmi nearly escaped the inning, but Aiden Wells was able to make it to first to force the fielder’s choice and allow two runs to cross the plate.
A two-out bunt single from Tanner Klee brought home another run to make it a 3-0 game, but the quick scoring spree would end there.
Despite the lack of offense, this was more than enough for the Bombers to come away with the shutout win thanks to their bullpen.
Hunter Payne tossed three innings on the mound in relief, only allowing two hits and striking out two. Peyton Cary came in to close the door, striking out two to earn the save and secure the 3-0 win for the Bombers.
Klee, Wells, Tolle, Proctor, Dan St. Clair and Ethan Gibson all registered a hit, but Wells came through with the lone pair of RBIs on the day.
Following the win the Bombers will have the weekend off and will return to action against Lyon County for a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 5.
