The Daviess County Fire Department responded to a structure fire Saturday evening that left a home located in the 4800 block of Sutherland Road with severe fire, smoke and water damage. Though no one was injured in the fire, DCFD officials said to two family cats died.

According to Assistant Daviess County Fire Chief Shaun Blandford, first responders arrived at the scene at 5 p.m. Firefighters were met with heavy flames and smoke coming from the residence.

Blandford said the homeowner lived there with her family but at the time of the fire was home alone with her two cats and dog. According to statements provided to DCFD, the homeowner heard a loud “pop” coming from an electrical socket. The fire erupted quickly, and the homeowner was able to escape the home with her dog.

DCFD was able to put the fire out quickly, Blandford said, but the damage to the home was severe. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family with necessary materials and a place to stay.
