A new mural will soon have a home in downtown Owensboro. New Beginnings Sexual Assault Support Services are searching for artists to design a new anti-violence themed mural that will promote their Green Dot Program.
The Community Green Dot is designed for businesses and agencies that want to make a difference within their own place of work as well as within the community they live in.
Karla Ward, executive director at New Beginnings, said Green Dot is a primary prevention program recognized by the CDC in reducing violence when people are given the right tools.
“Kentucky has the highest rate of child abuse and neglect in the nation, one of the highest rates of sexual violence and one of the highest rates of Adverse Childhood Experiences among adults,” Ward said. “Green Dot teaches bystanders to be proactive when you see violence, regardless of what form of violence, by giving you safe and effective strategies.”
Ward said New Beginnings is committed to reducing violence in the community and they want people to see this mural as a call to action.
“Local artists know the Owensboro community and we believe they understand the mission of the agency and the premise behind Green Dot,” Ward said. “We have been contacted by several who are excited to be able to submit their ideas and we can’t wait to see their vision come to life to match ours.”
Larry and Rosemary Conder have donated the space for the mural, which will be at 3rd and Allen streets.
Artists can submit their bids and project ideas by emailing [email protected]. The deadline is Aug. 31.
