Daviess County Fiscal Court approved resurfacing approximately 28 miles of county roads during a meeting Thursday.
The county’s public works department is proposing to resurface roads totaling 11.5 miles in the east district, 5.7 in the central district and 10.3 in the west district.
“We originally had looked at spending $1.5 million in paving,” said Daviess County Judge-Executive Al Mattingly. “We actually talked about going to $1.8 million but then COVID-19 comes on. We have since lost $250,000 roughly from the state.”
Jordan Johnson, purchasing agent for Daviess County Fiscal Court, said this is an annual exercise between the county, the Commonwealth of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and Department of Rural and Municipal Aid that provides funds for the construction, reconstruction and maintenance of certain roads and bridges throughout the county. These funds are derived from the state motor fuel tax.
Fiscal Court also approved a $7,155 HVAC replacement for the Courthouse archives. The current system is about 30 years old and cannot conserve court documents well.
Commissioners also approved a $6,252 kennel painting project for the Daviess County Animal Shelter. Johnson said the number of animals at the shelter is low under COVID-19, which makes this an opportune time to pursue repainting all the kennel walls.
