Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear asked for child care centers across the state to develop a plan that would allow them to close with as little as 72 hours notice “if we deem it necessary.”

“It’s going to be another tough step,” Beshear said in a news conference Saturday afternoon.

“I know a lot of people are watching this and wondering how they would deal with that, how they would manage the child care,” Beshear said. “If it wasn’t absolutely necessary or we didn’t think that it would become or could become necessary, we wouldn’t ask for these plans.”

Beshear said he hopes the decision will allow people to prepare in case the situation worsens.

“We hope this gives people some lead time,” he said. “We just have to do what it takes to lessen the spread of this coronavirus. I don’t want to be the Governor that waits two weeks too late to take some of those steps.”

As of 3 p.m. Saturday, Kentucky has 16 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Counties with confirmed cases are Harrison (6), Jefferson (4), Fayette (3), Bourbon (1), Nelson (1) and Montgomery (1). One patient from Harrison County has fully recovered.
