Owensboro Catholic’s John Cason earned a top-10 finish to close out his high school career in Saturday’s cross country Class 1A state championship in Lexington.
Cason took sixth overall with a time of 16:57.04 — improving five spots from last year’s race — and he led the Aces to eighth as a team.
Other scoring runners for the Catholic boys were Joe Fusco (27th, 17:51.25), Ty Gatten (86th, 19:00.84), Logan Jones (69th, 18:46.38) and Jude Neal (108th, 19:19.57).

Cason, who had trouble getting around a big pack of runners at the beginning of the race, said he let the nerves to get him.
“I let the nerves control me too much on this race. I need to work on that,” he said. “The beginning of the race was kind of crowded, but I knew I could catch back up if I didn’t go out hard enough.”
He said making the decision to swing around the pack to move up was a tough one.
“Everyone gets jittery here sprinting out hard,” he said. “It’s kind of like in the beginning of the race you have to see where you are and then go from there.”
Catholic’s girls were led by senior Katie Hayden, who finished 22nd with a time of 20:59.59. The Lady Aces did not have a team score, as one runner was disqualified.
Other runners who finished for the Lady Aces were Ella Claire Goetz (134th, 24:30.10), Bethany Mayfield (158th, 25:24.67) and Anna Lee Meyer (164th, 25:35.35).
Trinity’s boys had two runners in the state meet — Gavin Howard (196th, 20:22.82) and Jacob Howard (208th, 20:34.34).
