Panthers sweep 3A region title; Lady Aces first in 1A

The Daviess County boys’ and girls’ cross country teams continued a long stretch of local success, earning first place in both races of the Class 3A Region 1 meet at Marshall County on Saturday.

They automatically qualify for the state championships next week, as do the fourth-place Apollo boys. Three other individuals — two Apollo girls and one Owensboro boy — also qualified for the state meet.

Brady Terry (16:39.25) led the Panthers’ effort with a second-place finish, while Ainsley Taylor (20:46.82) was the runner-up in the girls’ race.

Other scoring runners for the Panthers were Alex Adams (7th, 17:36.86), Justin Shelton (15th, 17:57.54), Caleb Tidwell (18th, 18:08.57) and Logan Gish (21st, 18:24.06).

Emily Ann Roberts (4th, 20:59.77), Emily Rempe (5th, 21:12.11), Avery Heath (8th, 21:48.72) and Kayley Payne (9th, 21:55.99) scored for the girls’ team.

The Apollo boys’ fourth-place finish was led by freshman Thomas Ashby (5th, 17.20.84) and senior Blake Rigdon (8th, 17:42.74). Other scoring runners for the Eagles were Ethan Dych (13th, 17:53.24), Leland Smith (28th, 18:45.79) and Jake Alvey (37th, 19:09.87).

Apollo’s girls finished eighth, with Abby Rumage (30th, 24:14.30) and Ahmira Pickett (34th, 24:25.14) qualifying for state. Other scoring runners were Angel King, (35th, 24:28.56), Baylee Hare (48th, 25:35.63) and Madalyn Hyland (54th, 26:21.71).

The Owensboro boys finished ninth and were led by state-qualifier Michael Ashley (23rd, 18:32.97), and they also got scoring from Nathanael Turner (39th, 19:20.61), Lance Burdette (53rd, 20:43.96), Jacob Coleman (56th, 21:03.91) and Reece Carroll (61st, 21:35.75).

The OHS girls’ took 10th and were led by Ashley Colburn (23rd, 23:41.52), Kayla Davison (57th, 27:46.61),  Kenyatta Chappell (58th, 27:52.61), Alondra Villapando (63rd, 30:50.17) and Claudette Villapando (65th, 32:06.18).

Region 2 Class A
In the Class 1A Region 2 championship meet in Bowling Green, the Owensboro Catholic girls won their first team title in 16 years. While the boys’ team placed third overall, senior John Cason won the individual title in 16:49.01.

Both teams qualified for next week’s state championships.

The Lady Aces were led by Alexandra Scheithe (2nd, 20:53.49), Katie Hayden (3rd, 20:55.26), Kate Weafer (9th, 22:10.38), Kaylee Morris (11th, 22:25.92) and Ella Claire Goetz (21st, 23:45.82).

Other scoring runners for the Aces were Joseph Fusco (5th, 17:58.86), Logan Jones (15th, 19:08.23) Jude Neal (16th, 19:12.18) and Ty Gatten (28th, 20:10.67).

Trinity placed seventh and was led by Gavin Howard (26th, 19:53.33). Other scoring runners for the Raiders were Jacob Howard (29th, 20:21.10), Lucas Rhodes (45th, 21:52.24), Dalton Millay, (47th, 22:00.93) and Nicholas Ward (64th, 26:22.87).
