UPDATE — The escaped inmate has been captured.
Officials are looking for escaped inmate William L. Smith after he walked away from a work-release program site near Hillcrest Golf Course.
Smith, a community level custody inmate, walked away from a work detail at 2973 Fairview Drive at approximately 1:35 p.m. He is a 29-year old white male with dark hair that is approximately five inches long on the top of his head. He is approximately 5’10” tall and weighs 170 pounds. Smith has a dark complexion and is clean-shaven. It is believed Smith is no longer wearing his jail uniform.
Deputy Jailers and local law enforcement are working together to locate Smith and the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency and the Daviess County Detention Center at 270-685-8466 ext. 232.

Owensboro Police Department is assisting in locating the inmate. According to Public Information Officer Andrew Boggess, the inmate is believed to have been on a work-release program.
Daviess County Jailer Art Maglinger could not be reached for comment at this time.
Several Daviess County Public Schools sent out a lockout notice once they were notified about the inmate.
DCPS Public Information Officer Lora Wimsatt said a lockout is implemented when a situation of concern is outside the building.
“All school doors are locked throughout the day with exception of the front door, which leads to the secured foyer area,” she said. “During a lockout, that door is also locked. Depending on the situation, either nobody is allowed to enter or leave or may be admitted upon sight or recognition.”
A lockdown is implemented when a situation of concern is inside the building, she said.
