Owensboro Fire Chief Steve Mitchell said while he and his team expected the storm that hit the area around 3 p.m. Tuesday, the wind that accompanied it was a surprise.
Mitchell, who had been talking with the National Weather Service throughout the day, was notified of 40 mile per hour wind in Indiana, but said there was no indication that speed would enter Kentucky.
“We had some pretty intense wind in the central part of the city,” he said. “We had a lot of runs packed into 30 to 40 minutes.”
Damage consisted of down power lines and trees and no injuries were reported as a result of the weather, Mitchell said. Some fires were reported, but those were isolated to trees and poles.
“We had a weeks worth of calls in one 30-minute storm,” Mitchell said.
According to Daviess County Emergency Management Agency Director Andy Ball, thunderstorms are possible the rest of the week and weekend. The greatest threat is Thursday, Ball said, but NWS has not released any data regarding the timing of future storms.
