Kentucky students from each grade level were honored at an awards ceremony Friday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark for posters and essays they created that expressed how Kentucky’s agriculture community is working to address hunger.
Whitesville fourth-grader Benjamin Caldbeck was the winner for his grade level in the poster contest. Caldbeck’s poster displayed several farming aspects in the foreground, including signs U-Pick, Buy Local, KDA and a food bank. Farmers were shown working the fields, along with livestock, fresh vegetables and a thriving cityscape in the background.
The theme for the contest was “Kentucky Farms: Growing Solutions for a Growing World.” As a selected winner, Caldbeck received a $100 check from Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom (KyAEC), a meal featuring foods from Kentucky Proud producer and tickets to the Lexington Legends baseball game against the Greenville, S.C. Drive.
“I want to congratulate the winners, who depicted in art and writing how our farmers are helping feed the hungry here in Kentucky and around the world,” Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said.
