Since starting the season 2-2, Owensboro Catholic have won 10 of their last 14 and enter the All “A” Classic full of momentum. This afternoon at 12:30 at Daviess County High School the Aces square off against Hazard as they look to win their second straight All “A” title.
The Aces pitching has been a real strength, with four of their five pitchers who have thrown 15 or more innings, posting an ERA under 2.50. Luke Quinn leads the pitching staff with innings (36 2/3), strikeouts (31), and wins (6). The senior has only allowed 19 hits and eight earned runs, while walking a measly eight batters.
Barrett Evans leads the team in ERA with a 1.34, striking out 17 and walking only three across 15 2/3 innings. Lane Hundley (22 strikeouts, 1.91 ERA) and Jaxson White (18 strikeouts, 2.41 ERA) round out the top of the Aces rotation. Gentry Atwell has pitched in a team-high 10 games, striking out 21 and recording a save.
The Aces offense compliments their pitching staff, with Brady Atwell leading the way. The senior catcher is hitting .419, with seven RBIs and two triples. He has missed a handful of games due to injury, but made his return earlier this week. Parker Heistand has recorded team highs in homers (2) and RBIs (12), while Jaxson White and Evans have both stolen a team high five bases.
Owensboro Catholic’s offense is hitting .258, with three homers and 75 RBIs and are 33-38 in stolen base attempts.
The Aces offense with have their hands full with Hazards’ pitching staff, led by Max Pelfrey (24 innings, 0.88 ERA) and Isiah Johnson (21 innings, 0.33 ERA). The Bulldogs offense has only hit three homers, but has driven in 107 runs and are hitting .323. They are also a massive threat on the bases, stealing 45 bags in 48 attempts.
Fortunately for the Aces, the roster is battle tested, dating back to last year’s All “A” title and deep State Tournament run.
