Daviess County residents impacted by recent flooding will soon have additional options to dispose of damaged household materials, according to Daviess County Fiscal Court.
A temporary collection site will open Tuesday at Stanley Park, located at 59 Church Street. The Solid Waste Department will provide containers for household waste, construction and demolition debris, and sandbags. The site will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Residents must stop at the check-in station off U.S. 60 to document their affected address, Fiscal Court officials said. There will be no charge for disposing of flood-damaged interior home debris, such as drywall, carpet and furniture.
Appliances should be taken to a recycling center like Dahl & Groezinger, provided they do not contain Freon, officials said. The Daviess County Landfill will accept empty, flood-affected refrigerators.
The temporary collection site at Stanley Park will operate through May 3. Residents will enter off Highway 60 and exit onto Church Street.
In addition to Stanley Park, Fiscal Court said two other sites are available for free flood debris disposal:
- Daviess County Landfill
- Knottsville Convenience Center
At Stanley Park, residents will find designated areas for construction and demolition debris—including lumber, drywall, carpet, and affected furniture—as well as a separate section for household debris such as electronics and household hazardous waste, including paint, pesticides, cleaning supplies and spoiled food. Outdoor and garage hazardous waste should not be brought to the park but instead saved for the next Household Hazardous Waste Day on September 27, officials said.
A collection box will also be available at Stanley Park for used or unused sandbags.
Fiscal Court is encouraging residents to clean up flood debris promptly. For assistance, residents may contact the American Red Cross in Owensboro at 270-683-2438.
The Green River District Health Department and the Kentucky Department for Public Health recommend an up-to-date Tdap vaccine for anyone participating in flood cleanup. Residents are also advised to watch for asbestos, which may be present in ceiling and floor tiles, plaster, and pipe insulation, especially in materials manufactured between 1950 and 1975.
For questions about flood debris cleanup, residents may call the Daviess County Emergency Management Agency at 270-685-8448 or the Daviess County Landfill at 270-229-4484.
