Due to rising floodwaters along U.S. 60 near the community of Stanley in Daviess County, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to block the highway near the 6.6 mile point — at the intersection of U.S. 60 and KY 279 — at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday.
Transportation personnel spent Thursday repaving a section of the highway just outside of Stanley, raising a low section of U.S. 60 by approximately four inches.
“While that work was not enough to prevent flood waters from crossing the roadway, it did allow KYTC to keep U.S. 60 open for residents of the community for several additional hours,” KYTC said in a release.
If flooding continues to worsen tonight and tomorrow, the barricade will be moved accordingly, officials said.
U.S. 60 is already blocked by floodwaters 6.5 miles north of Stanley, just across the county line in Henderson. All other routes into and out of the community are also already blocked.
Motorists are asked not to move or drive around barricades once they are in place. The roadway is being blocked because it is underwater, and conditions are considered unsafe for driving.
