The Owensboro Family YMCA has received a $208,000 grant to launch an opioid prevention program targeting local youth and families, with a focus on education and early intervention.

The new initiative will integrate opioid prevention education into existing YMCA programs, including after-school care, summer camps, and teen leadership activities. The curriculum is designed for children as young as 4 years old through high school and is based on successful models from other states.

“We believe the YMCA is uniquely positioned to lead this effort,” said Tom Bontrager, CEO of the Owensboro Family YMCA. “With our long-standing commitment to youth development and strong partnerships with schools and families, this grant allows us to make a real difference in combatting the opioid crisis before it starts.”

The program will feature interactive lessons, family engagement events, and collaboration with local health and law enforcement professionals to provide real-world context and support. The YMCA will use its established youth programs — including a growing high school leadership initiative and an expanded after-school network — as the foundation for delivering the new content.

This grant-funded effort comes as Owensboro and Daviess County continue working to address the long-term effects of opioid misuse. YMCA officials said the program will focus on prevention and resilience-building to help create a safer and healthier future for the next generation.
