Habitat for Humanity Owensboro-Daviess County is relocating its monthly aluminum can drive to its new home at 2930 West 4th Street, marking a major step in the nonprofit’s growing recycling initiative. The next collection event will take place this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, with proceeds supporting Habitat’s local operations and homebuilding mission.

The event was previously held at the Midtown Building on Frederica Street. Habitat’s campus is located at 2930 West 4th Street.

The move was prompted by Habitat’s expansion and the need for a location better suited to handle high traffic, according to Habitat Executive Director Jeremy Stephens. The transition is further supported by OMU’s donation of a large-capacity can bin last year.

“We are incredibly grateful to Malcolm Bryant for allowing us to use the Midtown Building parking lot for so many years,” Stephens said. “Now that we have the capacity, we want our supporters to know that our monthly can drives will be held at our own campus. We are blessed by the continuous support of the Owensboro-Daviess County community.”

The can drive is part of Habitat’s ongoing recycling initiative. By partnering with Novelis, a major player in the aluminum industry, Habitat earns grant funding and has tripled its recycling income over the past few years.

“Aluminum is the most valuable material in home recycling bins,” said Desiree Cecil, Habitat’s Office Manager.  “Our monthly can drives offer an easy way for everyone to support our mission. Simply bring clean, dry, and bagged cans — we’ll handle the rest. The proceeds go directly into our operating budget, helping fund fuel costs  for our Habitat trucks.”

Beyond fundraising, Habitat’s Homeownership Program applicants play an integral role in managing the recycling initiative. They assist in unloading donations, place collection bins at businesses and churches, and regularly collect cans from these locations.

“Our future homeowners are instrumental in making this program a success,” said Jill Keller of Habitat’s  Homeowner Services Committee. “They not only manage can drives but also earn sweat equity by contributing their own bagged cans to the effort.”

The can drive will take place rain or shine. Community members are encouraged to participate by bringing their aluminum cans to the new location and supporting Habitat’s mission to build homes and hope.
