The Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC) Foundation has received a $25,000 gift from Domtar to enhance student engagement and program initiatives.
The funds will support three key areas: the upcoming Trade Wars competition, the creation of a new Craftsman Closet for students, and equipment upgrades for OCTC’s Industrial Maintenance program.
Domtar’s sponsorship includes $5,000 toward the Trade Wars event, earning them the role of presenting sponsor. The annual event showcases students’ technical skills through competitive demonstrations in various trades.
Another $10,000 will go toward establishing the Craftsman Closet, a new resource center designed to provide students access to tools and materials needed for hands-on training in skilled trades programs.
The remaining $10,000 will help purchase laser alignment tools for OCTC’s Industrial Maintenance Technology program.
“These laser shaft alignment tools will provide students the opportunity for hands-on experience with the tools they will be using on the job, and will better prepare students for the increasingly technology-driven industry they will enter upon graduation,” said Sean Steele, program coordinator for Industrial Maintenance Technology.
Sydney Warren, executive director of the OCTC Foundation, called the gift a major investment in student success.
“We are incredibly grateful to Domtar for their generous gift,” Warren said. “This contribution will have a profound impact on our students and programs, providing them with the resources and opportunities they need to confidently enter their career.”
Dr. Scott Williams, OCTC president, said Domtar’s support reflects the company’s commitment to community development.
“This gift will enhance our ability to provide high-quality education and training to our students, preparing them for successful careers in their chosen fields,” Williams said. “We are excited about the opportunities this funding will create.”
Murray Hewitt, general manager of Domtar’s Hawesville Mill, said the company values its long-standing partnership with OCTC.
“OCTC not only provides an exemplary complement to our apprenticeship program but also significantly enhances our local area’s capacity to supply highly skilled labor at an unprecedented level,” Hewitt said.
