James Leigh (Jim) Smithson, 82, of Owensboro, passed away on March 6, 2025. He was born June 30, 1942 in Philpot, KY to John L. Smithson and Sarah Jones Smithson. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Lila Jo Martin Smithson, his children Donna Jo Fitzpatrick (Scott) and John Smithson (Wendy), and four grandchildren Kirby Fitzpatrick, Riley Fitzpatrick, Joshua James Smithson, and Jacob Leigh Smithson (Chloe).
Jim and Lila have been members of Bellevue Baptist for over 4 decades.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Duncan, David, Marvin, and his sister Minnie Johnson.
After graduating from Daviess County High in 1960, Jim had a variety of careers including 18 years as owner of a Mac Tools Distributorship. He was known as the “Mac Man” by mechanics all around the area. His favorite job after that was the years he spent working in Walmart’s hardware department.
In retirement, he could be found seeking out treasures to sell online. He also made daily trips to the public library to meet with a group of friends to talk about sports, news, and tell jokes. They were commonly known as the “Table of Knowledge” and were even featured in the Messenger-Inquirer.
Jim was a quiet, unassuming, Godly man who brought laughter and warmth to those who crossed his path. He was always there for friends and family in need. He will be treasured and missed by his family and those who got to know him.
There will be a small memorial service on March 17th at the Cedarhurst Beaumont in Lexington, KY.
Care Cremation and Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with final care.
