The Owensboro Family YMCA is launching a free, non-contact boxing program designed to empower individuals with Parkinson’s disease through movement, strength, and community. The program aims to improve balance, coordination, and overall well-being in a supportive and encouraging environment.

The first session will take place on February 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Beginning March 3, classes will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

After initial assessments, the YMCA will also launch a caregiver support group to run alongside the program. The sessions will address key Parkinson’s symptoms, including small movements, imbalance, stiffness, flexed posture, and respiratory weakness.

“Hearing the need from our community, we quickly realized there was no dedicated space in Owensboro for Parkinson’s patients to gather and support one another,” said YMCA CEO Tom Bontrager. “Thanks to a mini-grant from Owensboro Health, we were able to certify a YMCA fitness instructor, and our senior YMCA members generously donated to purchase specialized equipment. We are incredibly grateful to provide this resource to our community.”

To register, contact Wellness Director Jordan Profitt at [email protected] or 270-663-8208 by February 25.

The Owensboro Family YMCA is located at 900 Kentucky Parkway.
