Residents in Owensboro and surrounding areas should prepare for a wintry mix of rain and snow overnight, with potential travel impacts during the Tuesday morning commute, according to the National Weather Service. A second weather system later this week is also expected to bring a few inches of rain with the possibility of sleet, forecasts show.
The NWS in Paducah has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of western Kentucky, including Daviess County, from midnight Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Forecasters predict 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation, with a light glaze of ice possible.
According to Andy Lesage, forecaster with NWS Paducah, precipitation will move in after midnight and continue through Tuesday. While warmer ground temperatures may limit accumulation on roadways, slippery or slushy conditions are expected, particularly where moderate snowfall occurs.
A second system moving through Wednesday into Wednesday night may bring freezing rain and sleet to the far northwestern portions of the region, though the majority of the area is expected to see rain, forecasts show.
The additional rainfall this weekend could bring total precipitation amounts to 1-4 inches, with higher totals in southeast Kentucky and Tennessee. With ongoing minor flooding along the Green and Ohio Rivers, forecasters warn that flooding issues could persist and potentially worsen.
While winter weather is expected to be short-lived, residents should remain prepared for hazardous travel conditions and the potential for rising water levels later in the week.
