Seeded 14th out of 16 teams in the bowling state tournament, the Apollo boys’ team upset third seed Holy Cross in a thrilling five-set match. The Eagles took the first two baker games, before Holy Cross won two straight to force a fifth set. Apollo rolled a 231 to punch their ticket to the top eight.

In the quarterfinals, Apollo cruised past sixth seed Simon Kenton 3-1 – highlighted by a game-high 212 to advance to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Eagles fell 3-0 to tenth seeded Covington Catholic by scores of 198-200, 180-234, and 136-174.

“We overcame a low seeding to defeat the three seed and got our momentum rolling,” Apollo coach Kerrie Franklin said. “Seniors Landon Thompson, Andrew Smith, and Brycen Chenault kept our guys going all day and really led the way to our State Semi-Finalist finish. The coaching staff and I are beyond proud of this team and what they accomplished today. Losing four seniors is going to be tough, but we have several up-and-coming underclassmen that have now gotten a taste of what it takes to get to state and get close to the end. I know they are going to continue to work on their game to get us back there. We are excited for them and the future of Apollo Bowling.”

The girls’ state tournament that was scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed due to weather and has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 26. The Unified and Adapted Bowling State Championships that were originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12, have been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 25.
