Traveling to the Steve Johnston Memorial Invite, Daviess County wrestling finished fourth, while Owensboro Catholic, Owensboro, and Trinity (Whitesville) were also in attendance.

On the boys’ side, Jackson Stoner finished 4-0 and won his weight class. Other finishes at their respective weight classes included Aiden Ranburger (3-1, 2nd), Cole Raymer (3-1, 3rd), Kaden Nichols (3-2, 4th), Elijah Roberts (3-2, 4th), Ollie Ezell (3-2, 5th), and Parker Lowry (6th).

On the girls’ side, Kali Nichols took home the gold and a perfect 4-0 record, while Lylli Sandefur (2-2, 3rd), and Kaylee Klee (2-2, 4th) also had impressive performances.

“I thought we looked good, but we’re still looking for that aggressiveness and tenacity that some wrestlers bring to each match,” Daviess County coach Colton Gonzalez said. “There is another level of intensity we need to be at and we’re just not there yet. We wrestled well and did some things really well, but also didn’t do some things well. We have a lot to build on and improve over these next few weekends before regionals.”

Sending six middle schoolers and four high schoolers, the Aces finished eighth. Wrestling at 150 and 285 respectively, both Thomas Brauer and Tristan French finished second. Logan Mongold took third at 133, while Bo Jones was fourth at 215.

“I was pleased with the effort our kids gave today,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Matt Allen said. “We had a couple of our more experienced kids out sick, but our younger guys stepped up and wrestled well. This was a good warm up before regionals roll around in two weeks and this tournament wrapped up our regular season. Next weekend we have a couple of our guys, Tristan French and Sam Brauer, heading to Louisville to compete for a JV state title. For everyone else on the team it’s time to really lock in and work out any kinks before we roll into the postseason.”

The Lady Devils Drew Crandall and Christina Summers finished fifth and sixth in their respective weight classes. For the boys’ Isrell Roberts finished sixth and Ryan Schaefer was eighth. Daniel Fickas also had a solid showing.

“We are still battling injury and illness pretty heavily. This was pretty evident with our small group we took today”, Owensboro head coach Griffen Kelley said. “However, it was a good opportunity to get some more experience and reps for some of our younger guys.”
