The annual Night to Shine event returns tonight, offering an unforgettable prom experience for individuals with special needs.
Sponsored in part by the Tim Tebow Foundation and held at the Owensboro Convention Center, Night to Shine is in its eighth year of being organized locally by Life Community Church. The event continues to grow, with 250 guests registered this year, the largest turnout yet.
“Our prayer is for all our guests and families to feel included and loved by our community,” said Kerri Booker, co-organizer of the event. “We had 140 guests register in the first 12 minutes when registration opened in November, and we were able to grow that list to 250.”
Each guest is paired with a volunteer for the evening, and this year, 400 trained volunteers will help ensure the night runs smoothly. The Tim Tebow Foundation requires volunteers to complete a 45-minute training session prior to the event.
“For every guest we have, there’s at least one volunteer who goes through the event with them, showing them the different areas and creating new friendships,” Booker said.
Despite the large turnout, 25 guests remain on the waiting list due to limited volunteer availability. Booker said the goal for next year is to recruit more volunteers so no one has to be turned away.
Parents and caregivers are also invited to attend, with an estimated 175 expected. A special respite room will be available for them, offering a full dinner, entertainment, and sponsored giveaways.
“They’re still on-site, so they don’t have to worry about leaving their loved one,” Booker said. “But they’re able to relax and have a good time, knowing they’re close enough if needed.”
Life Community Church Lead Pastor Michael Edwards said the event is a highlight for the church and the community.
“We are absolutely thrilled to host Night to Shine this year at the Owensboro Convention Center, who has been a great partner for us,” Edwards said. “This event is a beautiful expression of God’s love, and we can’t wait to celebrate and honor these incredible people in our community.”
Edwards emphasized the joy the event brings to all involved.
“Night to Shine is one of the most joyful nights of the year. It’s a privilege for our church to provide a place where every guest feels cherished, celebrated, and reminded that they are fearfully and wonderfully made,” he said.
Booker encouraged anyone interested in volunteering or sponsoring next year’s event to reach out, noting that the Owensboro Convention Center provides ample space for continued growth.
“Our entire church family is eager to roll out the red carpet, dance, laugh, and create unforgettable memories,” Edwards said. “Seeing the pure joy on each guest’s face is a powerful reminder of the love of Christ. We are grateful to be part of such an inspiring moment, none of which could be done without the hundreds of volunteers and dozens of corporate partners.”
