James Douglas "Doug" Howard

James Douglas “Doug” Howard, age 91, passed away peacefully, at the Carmel Home in Owensboro, Kentucky, on Jan 30, 2025. He was born August 19, 1933, in Philpot, Kentucky to the late Arthur Leo Howard and Virginia House Howard. He was married to Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Howard for 65 years. She preceded him in death by 5 years.

Doug was a graduate of Daviess County High School, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brescia University, and his post graduate degrees from Western Kentucky University.

Doug served in the Army of the United States from June 1953 through May 1956. He taught art at Apollo High School and shop at Burns Middle School, after his lengthy employment with Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer. Doug and Betty also owned The Living Word Bookstore in Owensboro.

Doug was very active in his faith through numerous ministries in Owensboro’s Catholic Community, included: Precious Blood Parish, Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, Pre Cana, Engaged Encounter, Charismatic Renewal and Koinonia.

Doug was an accomplished professional artist, abundantly productive in many mediums.

Doug was preceded in death by infant son, Peter Michael Howard; grandson, Matthew Howard; and siblings, Arthur Howard Jr, Sharlene McDaniel, and Sharon Hill.

Doug and Betty’s surviving descendants include Carole and Ray Strecker, their 3 children, 9 grandchildren, Lee and Bernice (O’Bryan) Howard, their 4 children, 10 grandchildren, Mark and Donna (McCarty) Howard their 7 children and 5 grandchildren, and Eric and Margaret “Peggy” (Warren) Howard, their 3 children and 3 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Precious Blood Catholic Church. Burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with prayers being said at 6:00 p.m., on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory and again on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Precious Blood Catholic Church, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.

The family would like to thank the Carmel Home for the love and care given to their Dad over his last 7 years.
