Updated, 2:30 p.m. — Authorities say there were two fatalities due to a vehicle accident on U.S. 60 in east Daviess County near the intersection with Hawes Boulevard just after 7:30 on Friday morning.

(Editor’s note: Owensboro Times learned Friday of a plan by KYTC to the intersections of both Wrights Landing Road and Hawes Boulevard with U.S. 60. Read that story here.)

According to Sheriff Brad Youngman, preliminary investigation indicates a semi-truck hauling tons of rolled aluminum was northbound on Hawes Boulevard. Youngman said the driver was at the stop sign waiting to get on U.S. 60 and attempted to cross all four lanes.

Youngman said a pickup hauling a trailer with a Bobcat was traveling westbound on U.S. 60 and was unable to slow down, impacting the semi and “causing complete devastation to the pickup truck.”

According to Youngman, one person who was in the pickup was pronounced dead on scene. A second person was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and transported to the hospital by ambulance, but he later died from his injuries, Youngman said.

Youngman said accidents are too common on that stretch of roadway and they are looking into a solution.

The westbound lanes were closed for several hours. The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department, EMS , and an accident reconstruction unit all responded.
