The Owensboro Family YMCA and Kentucky Wesleyan College are partnering to launch a free tutoring program designed to support elementary students in the Owensboro community.

Beginning February 3, KWC students will provide tutoring sessions from 4:30 to 6 p.m. from Monday through Thursday at the Owensboro YMCA.

The program is open to all elementary students and aims to address academic challenges caused by the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At the YMCA, we are committed to addressing the lost time many students experienced during COVID,” said Tom Bontrager, president and CEO of the Owensboro Family YMCA. “With the incredible partnership of Kentucky Wesleyan College and the support of our community, we can make a real difference in the lives of these children. Together, we are helping build a stronger future.”

Dr. James Cousins, president of Kentucky Wesleyan College, echoed the significance of the initiative.

“The YMCA has been part of Kentucky Wesleyan’s history since our days in Millersburg,” Cousins said. “I’m excited to see this partnership grow in a new direction. Our students are eager to connect and make a real difference. This program isn’t just about tutoring; it’s about bringing together organizations that care deeply about Owensboro’s future.”

The program is further supported by a donation from the Owensboro Rotary Club, which funded renovations to the tutoring spaces. These newly remodeled rooms will provide a welcoming and engaging environment for students to focus on their studies.

Tutoring sessions will be led by dedicated KWC students who are passionate about making a positive impact in their community, the release says.

Parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children in the program can contact the Owensboro Family YMCA at 270-926-9622 or email [email protected] for more information.
