Similar to their first two All-A tournament games, Owensboro Catholic struggled to score in the first half against Lyon County, but stormed back in the third quarter. Yet this time around, the Aces couldn’t hit enough big shots down the stretch, ending their All-A tournament run 54-50.
“We had 10 steals in the game, but didn’t get enough points out of that,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Tim Riley said. “We forced them to 20 turnovers, but we didn’t get enough out of that. They shot the ball 7-15 from deep and outrebounded us by 13. I didn’t think we were good offensively and I am disappointed in that. We didn’t have a good game, and it was a bad night to not have a good game.
Trailing by three with six seconds left, Owensboro Catholic’s Luke Beickman stormed up the court and made enough space for a clean look – but his attempt to send it to overtime hit the back of the rim – hauled in by Lyon County.
“I didn’t think that was a bad shot,” Riley said. “I thought that was a good look. That gives us time if we get the offensive rebound to kick it back out because we needed three. We were out of timeouts, and we couldn’t shoot a two… That was a good look.”
The Aces took a 16-15 lead into the second quarter, but only scored four points over the next eight minutes – entering halftime trailing 24-20. Davyn Randolph was a bright spot for the Aces in the first half, hitting two threes, while the rest of the team shot 1-4 from deep. He would finish the game with 12 points on 4-5 shooting from deep.
“Randolph was really good,” Riley said.” Randolph was big for us. He played really well and if he doesn’t go 4-5 from three, we’re 2-12 from everybody else. He kept us in it with the way he shot it.”
After only scoring five points in the first half, Luke Beieckman found his stride in the third quarter, scoring seven of his team-high 18 points, while Dre’Mail Carothers added six of his 12 points. Trailing 41-33, the Aces responded with an 8-0 run to tie it and entered the fourth quarter down 43-41.
The Aces had their fair share of opportunities down the stretch to take the lead, but couldn’t capitalize.
Beickman finished with 18 points, four rebounds, one steal, and one assist. Dre’Mail Carothers added 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
The Aces shot 21-49 from the field and 4-16 from deep, while the Lyons shot 21-38 from the floor and 7-15 from behind the arc.
After playing three games in three days, Owensboro Catholic will take the week to recuperate before hosting Ohio County next Friday.
